I have to tell you one thing
right off the bat.
I’m a little nutty. That’s why
it’s hard for me to work in an office environment. One minute
I might be lying on the floor
with my work spread out all over the place. Another I’ll have my
legs up on the desk as I lean back thinking. Or I might take a
break and do a yoga posture in my chair or back on the floor
again.
That’s just me. Everyone who
knows me knows that about me. I’m just Haller — a little bit
different. Get me going and I’ll talk your ear off. I have so
much energy it’s hard to contain it.
But I think that’s just part
of the psychological stuff that makes some of us want to live
and work in our own environment. We’re able to function better
when we don’t have people breathing down our necks or looking at
us like we’re weird.
Anyway, I think that’s why I
pretty much had to go freelance. I just couldn’t stand the
corporate environment any more.

like to let you work from home on your own hours, pay you a
six-figure salary, and wait for you to show up when you want.

I learned graphic arts in “the
old school.”
I studied typography, design,
and interior and architectural design. Even fabric and furniture
design. You name it; I’ve studied it.
In fact, I learned every type
of graphic design there was. And I learned back when we did all
our design with a rapidograph — one of those pens you have to
fill with ink. And paint brushes. And you ordered type (words
and letters printed on paper), and then you cut them out and
pasted them on to other paper or you would stick everything down
with hot wax.
Then computers came along. I
took a huge pay cut and went to one of the first agencies that
was installing computers, and I was the first artist there to be
trained on them.
I learned it all, and I’m glad
I learned the “old-fashioned” way. But I’ll tell you what I know
today…
You don’t have
to do any of what I did.
The computer revolution in
graphic design has changed things so much that — as I said on
the cover of this letter — if you can point and click with a
mouse you can do what I do.
And you can make incredible
money.
How Much Can You Make?
Well, I make $100,000 to
$150,000 a year, depending on how much work I do. And I’m
raising three children and helping my husband in another
business. If I wanted to work harder I could make $200,000 a
year or more. Right now, that’s not what I want to do. But you
could.
More specifically, I make
$600, $1,000 or more for a simple 8 page sales letter. It
depends how much stuff I’m doing with the letter.
And what we call “magalogs,”
sales pieces that look like magazines (you get them all the time
in the mail), go from $3,000 to $6,000 to $10,000 apiece or
more. And you can comfortably do 2 in a month.
You do
the math.
Now I’m not saying you can hang out your shingle and get 2
magalogs a month to do. But if you start with sales letters and
do some good work for a few publishers, people will come back to
you again and again.
Do it well and before you know
it you can have all the work you want.
It’s common for a freelance
graphic designer to charge $60 to $75 an hour. Even at $60 an
hour, and even going 2 months without work, you’d make over
$100,000 for the year.
But here’s the best part of
all…
I LOVE MY WORK!
It’s great work. Every
job is new and different. If I don’t like a client, I don’t have
to work with them anymore.
And the freedom — good Gosh!
Money can’t even buy it…
I can take the children to
school, come home and work and talk to clients, bake some
cupcakes for an after-school party, take the kids to swimming
lessons, and then come home and work some more.
Sometimes — when everything’s
quiet in the house — I can knock out a $500 job before
I hit the sack myself.
Sometimes I get up early,
before everybody else, and get a chunk of work done. But I don’t
mind at all. For one thing, I’m not making $10,000 a year for my
sweat (if you know what I mean).
And I used to commute at least
2 or 3 hours a day to get to the agencies where I worked. Plus,
agency work can be a drag! They don’t pay you much, people steal
your ideas, you often don’t get credit for what you do, and
everybody is stepping over everyone else to get ahead.
Man, I’m glad I don’t do that
scene anymore.
